Whole Foods Markets was a dominant niche retailer that held a comparative advantage due to its supply chain relationships for years. However, now that organic food has gone more mainstream, it is having to compete in a game of scale against retailers with much greater scale. It may seem like a hedge fund flavor-of-the-month idea, but we are bearish on Whole Foods long-term.
